Get fit on the road

Even the busiest travellers and expats need to set aside time for exercise and fitness. Fortunately, the areas surrounding LPL Suites Greenbelt can be used as venues for your workout.

Where to exercise

The surrounding Greenbelt and Glorietta malls have no shortage of fitness clubs, but if you want to exercise under the sun, you can head to two parks - the Velazquez Park in Salcedo Village and Legaspi Park in Legaspi Village are all within walking distance of the hotel.

Some tips:
  • Trying working out in the mornings. After office hours, the parks get crowded with office workers and joggers trying to put in some exercise time before heading home.
  • You can do more than just jog around the parks. People use the wide, grassy knolls to do some calisthenics or body weight exercises (more on that later). A few wrestling teams even do their training sessions on the grass.
  • Legaspi and Salcedo Villages may get busy during the day, but they are relatively safe. Feel free to jog down the streets, especially before or after office hours.
  • Bring lots of water. Daytime temperatures can hit 36 degrees during the afternoon. Staying hydrated is a must.

What to exercise

For working out in the park, we suggest some circuit training routines. Circuit training is a series of high-intensity exercises done in succession, usually timed. Don't let the "high-intensity" part intimidate you. You can always scale back the intensity to suit your fitness level. And because circuit routines are fast, they're perfect for on-the-go executives.

As always consult a doctor or trainer before doing any exercise routines. That said, here's a simple plan you can try out. Since no two persons are alike, we're leaving the distances and number of repetitions up to you. Always err on the side of caution and set your targets low for the first couple of workouts to establish your benchmarks.

A solid circuit session for beginners

Warm-up (stretches and light jogging)

Run (50 to 100 meters)

Rest, if needed

Pushups (five to ten reps)

Air squats (five to ten reps)

Burpees (five to ten reps)

Rest, if needed

Run (50 to 100 meters)

Note that if you can't do two reps straight with good form, it's a signal for you to rest and decrease intensity. Don't be afraid to slow down, if needed. The reps and distances here are suggestions only; feel free to adjust to what you feel comfortable with.

Get lots of rest

After exertion, comes the relaxation. Given your busy travel and work schedule, some post-exercise rejuvenation is a must.

  • Rehydrate. Manila is a hot place. Replenishing lost fluids will make for faster recovery.
  • Get pampered. The surrounding Legaspi and Salcedo Villages are home to a wide number of spas that provide service to suit your needs.
  • "Zone" out and decompress. Back in your hotel room, try switching off the television and your mobile devices. Set aside time to let your mind relax and wander. Take slow, deep breaths.
  • Get lots of sleep. Easier said than done, of course. But setting aside at least seven hours of sleep each night will make you perform better during the work day.
